Pick-up is drop-off in reverse, but with a tired child who has already used up all their social energy. The brain is full, the body is full, and suddenly it has to switch to a new adult, a coat, a car ride and maybe a grocery stop on the way home. No wonder it cracks right there.
Visual support lets the transition start the moment you walk in, not the moment you say it is time. Show the steps in order: a picture for finishing play, one for collecting the coat, one for saying goodbye to a friend, one for heading to the car. Your child gets a concrete chain to lean on when their own willpower is gone.
A tip for this specific moment: tell them in the hallway what the first calm thing at home will be. A glass of juice and a book on the sofa, or a blanket and a short film.
