Dust the shelves
Dust falls downwards, so starting on the bottom shelf means doing it all twice. The visual support below shows the order from top to bottom and reminds your child that every item goes back where it was.
⚲Dusting the shelf
A hand sweeps a yellow duster along a wooden shelf, sending up puffs of dust, with a blue and a red item on the top shelf.
About this visual support
A shelf is rarely empty. It holds books, soft toys, a lamp, perhaps a row of stones collected on the beach. To dust it properly, your child has to lift each item away, wipe the surface and then put the item back where it stood. That is three steps per object, and the shelves also need to be done in the right order. Dust loosened at the top drifts onto the shelf below, so anyone who starts at the bottom ends up doing the job twice.
Pictures make that hidden logic visible. One card for the top shelf, one for the middle and one for the bottom, and your child can see straight away where the dust is heading. The small loop in between – lift, wipe, put back – repeats on every level.
A practical tip: snap a photo of the shelf on your phone before you start. When the items go back, your child can compare with the photo instead of asking where everything belongs. Younger children often manage best with just one shelf at a time. In the Routined app you can add each shelf as its own step in the cleaning routine and tick them off one by one. You can try the app for 14 days without paying.
