Potty and toothbrushing

Staying on the potty until something happens is hard when you are two and the whole bathroom is calling. The pictures below show children brushing their teeth while sitting on the potty, a simple order that makes the wait feel shorter.

About this visual support

Potty training is largely about waiting. Your child is supposed to sit still on the potty for a while, but a minute is long when the bath, the soap and the toilet roll are within reach. Many families notice that their child stands up after a few seconds and then needs to go back a quarter of an hour later. Pairing potty time with something that has to happen anyway, like brushing teeth in the morning or evening, gives the sitting both content and a natural length.

The pictures show boys sitting on a potty and brushing their teeth, one with the toothpaste tube in his hand, one with a cup beside him and one between the sink and the big toilet. Use them as one shared step in the bathroom routine instead of two separate ones. When the toothbrushing is finished the potty time is finished too, and your child knows what comes next.

A practical tip is to let an adult brush afterwards, standing in front of your child, so they can stay seated through the whole toothbrushing. Young children need help with brushing for several years anyway, so that step is already there. In Routined you can add Potty and toothbrushing as one step in the morning and evening routines, and the app can be tried for 14 days at no cost.
