A book between two people is an exercise in shared pace. One wants to turn the page, the other is still inside the picture on the previous spread, and reading together only works when both pause in the same place. For young children that is a large demand, and it is often where the cosy part breaks: someone turns too early, someone protests, and the book snaps shut.
With visual support, whose turn it is becomes something you look at rather than negotiate in the middle of the story. The pictures show who holds the book, when the page turns and how many books the evening holds, and the number is worth settling in advance. Lay out one card per book and remove a card after each one, so the last book announces itself without any argument. Let your child be in charge of turning the pages while you read, so both of you have a job on the same spread.
