For a child it is one of the first pieces of an own identity, and recognising it, being able to show it and hearing it used helps the child understand that they belong and are seen. In a group, like a preschool or school class, a name tag also becomes a practical support for finding your place, your things and your role.

Visual support with the name makes the identity clear and concrete. A name tag to point at or wear helps the child introduce themselves without having to say much, and makes it easier for others to get to know them. For a child who finds new contexts hard, that small security in a recognisable name can make a group less overwhelming.

A tip: tie the name to a picture or symbol the child recognises, for example on their place, their hook or their box, so their own name becomes a clear marker in everyday life.
