Pick up the box

A box on the floor looks simple, but it has to be gripped with both hands, lifted with the legs and then carried somewhere. The pictures below walk through the whole movement, from stepping up to the box until it stands where it belongs.

A boy bends down and lifts a blue box from the floor.

About this visual support

Lifting a box is a whole-body job. The feet need a stable base, the knees have to bend, the hands must find a grip on both sides, and the back should stay straight while the box comes up. For a child who is still getting to know their own body, that is a lot to hold together at once, and the box almost always feels heavier than it looks.

The second difficulty is the ending. Does the task count as done when the box is off the floor, when it sits on the table, or only when the lid is back on? Visual support makes that boundary visible. The last picture shows what the room looks like when everything is finished, so the child can compare the room with the picture instead of asking an adult each time. The argument about what counts as finished simply disappears.

One practical move is to put a strip of tape or a simple marker where the box belongs, so the final picture has an exact match in the room. That makes the job measurable for the child. In the Routined app you can build the lift as a small routine of its own with pictures, order and check-off, and try the app for fourteen days at no cost.
