Wash underarms

Holding one arm up while the other hand does the washing is a position that gets heavy within seconds. The visual support below breaks the step into parts, so both armpits are done before the arm sinks back down.

A child in a blue top raises one arm straight up and washes the underarm with soap and lather.

About this visual support

The armpit is one of the few places on the body a child cannot see while washing it. The arm has to go up, the head turns away, and the hand works by feel in a position that gets uncomfortable long before the soap has done anything.

So the step often disappears altogether, or happens so fast that only the shoulder gets wet. Pictures showing the arm up and the hand in place make the position clear before your child is standing under the water. Have them rest a hand on the opposite shoulder and lift the elbow: the armpit stays open without the arm being stretched straight up, and the pose holds far longer. Give the switch to the other side its own picture, or the second armpit gets forgotten as soon as the first one feels done.

If this step belongs with deodorant and clean clothes, you can build the whole chain as a visual schedule in Routined, with a fourteen-day trial at no charge. The pictures on this page download free.
