Trip to Germany

A trip to another country brings new sounds, words and places all at once. With the pictures below a child can walk through the journey in advance and recognise each step when it actually happens.

About this visual support

What does Germany actually mean to a child who has never been there? Maybe a flag from a football tournament, maybe nothing at all. Yet the child is expected to pack, travel to an airport, sit still on a plane, hear a language they do not understand and sleep in a bed that smells different. Each part is manageable on its own, but together and unknown they easily become one big lump of worry.

Visual support turns the trip into a series of concrete steps you can look at calmly at home, ideally several days before you leave. Lay the pictures out in the order they will happen: the suitcase, the flight, arriving, where you will stay and what you will do there. Talk about one card at a time and let the child ask questions. A tip is to add a photo of the house or hotel and a picture of something the child is looking forward to, such as a zoo or an ice cream in a new city. That gives the trip both a start and a goal.

Once you arrive, the same pictures can support the child in the moment. In Routined you can set up the travel days as their own routines with pictures and times, so the child sees what happens next even far from home. You can try the app for 14 days, and the pictures here are free to download.
