Go to Hugo

Another home smells different, has its own rules about shoes and snacks and runs to a schedule nobody explained. The visual support below sets out what the visit will contain, so a child knows what waits on the other side of the door.

Two boys open their arms toward each other on a patch of grass, with an arrow pointing the way.

About this visual support

Visiting a friend is really two things at once: playing and being a guest. The playing is usually the easy half. The hard half is everything around it, meaning what happens with shoes, whether the fridge is allowed, how long the visit lasts and what to do if the game runs out before the time does.

Pictures turn the visit into a story with a beginning and an end. A short sequence showing the walk there, the greeting, a game, a snack and the way home gives a child a map of the time at Hugo's, and the ending is negotiated in advance instead of in the middle of something good. Fix the going-home step as a picture with a clock time before you leave, and let the child keep the card. For anyone who is easily overwhelmed in new surroundings, a card for a pause, a few minutes in the hallway or on the balcony, can be what makes the whole visit hold.

In Routined you can set up the visit with pictures and an end time, so the way home stays visible even when you are somewhere else. The pictures here are free, and the app can be tried for 14 days at no cost.
