About this visual support
The subject moves between two kinds of content. One is facts that can be learned: people, places, festivals, symbols and the order of the year. The other is interpretation, where two classmates can answer differently and both be right. It is that second part that is hard for children who look for rules, because the uncertainty cannot be calculated away.
Visual support helps most on the factual side, and that is more often where the problem sits than people assume. Once the cross, the candlestick, the church and the order of the festivals exist as pictures, the words in the text have something to attach to. Only then can the conversation turn to what people believe and why.
