Few places make as many unspoken demands on a child as a library does. The voice has to drop without anyone explaining why, the queue at the desk follows an invisible order, and the shelves offer more choices than anyone can survey. A child who is told to be quiet still has not learned what you actually do in there.
Visual support can lay the visit out as a chain of actions: go in, return the old books, look in the children's section, choose three, borrow at the desk, go home. The number does more work than anything else, because three books is a task while a whole shelf is an ocean. Put the library card first in the sequence, since it is otherwise the step discovered at the counter when it is already too late. Give whispering its own card with a clear picture instead of making it a correction delivered on the spot.
