Lullaby

When the light goes off, the sounds of the day are still in the room: a dishwasher, a car, a neighbour on the stairs. The visual support below shows where the lullaby belongs in the evening, as the last thing allowed to make a sound.

A mother holds a swaddled baby close and sings with her eyes closed, with music notes beside her.

About this visual support

The voice does not need to be beautiful, it needs to be the same every night. A lullaby works as a sound environment rather than a performance: it settles over the dishwasher, the traffic and everything else still audible, and gives the ear one single thing to follow. That is why tempo and volume matter more than hitting the notes.

A picture card for the song lets the child ask for it without speaking, which counts for a lot once the evening has reached the point where more words only wake everyone up again. The card also shows that the song comes after brushing teeth and the story, not instead of them. Sing slower and quieter than feels natural, and keep the same strength all the way through: it is the steadiness, not the melody, that slows the breathing down.

The pictures on this page are free to download. If you would rather have the order of the evening on a screen than on the fridge, you can build it in Routined and try it for fourteen days at no cost.
