Meal Prep

Cooking several dishes, chopping vegetables and keeping track of what to do when easily becomes a blurry whole with no clear start. With the pictures lined up in order, the child gets a thread to follow. The steps are below.

About this visual support

Meal prep is not one task but several at once: one thing to boil, another to chop, a third to sit and rest. For a child who struggles to plan several steps at the same time, it all melts into a single vague pile of things to do, and then it is hard to even know where to begin.

When the prep is laid out as a picture row, the messy whole turns into a sequence of separate actions. Rinse the vegetables, chop them, measure the rice, turn on the stove. The child does not have to hold the entire plan in mind at once but takes one picture at a time and lets the rest wait until it is due.

One concrete tip: add a picture of how the finished dish should look at the very end, as a goal to compare against. Then the child knows not only the next step but also where the whole thing is heading. If you want to build your own order with pictures and ticking off, you can do it in the Routined app, so the same structure can be reused next time you cook together.
