Setting the table is a sequence that has to fall in the right order to come out right. Plate first, then cutlery on either side, glass a little above, napkin beside. Each thing belongs in a set spot, and if the child loses the order halfway, it easily becomes a pile of cutlery in the wrong place and a glass left out.
Visual support gives the child a template to compare against instead of holding the whole layout in memory. A picture of a finished place setting becomes a map: put this here, then this, until the child's spot looks like the picture. Then setting the table becomes something the child can finish alone, and you are spared reminding about the fork at every plate.
One concrete tip: set one place together first, so the child sees what the end result should look like, then let the child copy the same layout for the rest of the family. Having a finished model beside you makes each new spot easier than the last.
