Pair socks

Pairing socks is one of the first laundry jobs children can manage entirely on their own. It is like a memory game, but a pile of socks can also feel endless. Pictures show the start and the finish. The visual support is below.

About this visual support

Socks disappear, swap places and end up in the wrong drawer, and in a family with children they quickly fill a whole basket. Pairing them is a good job for children from preschool age, since it trains comparing colour, pattern and size. But without a clear start and finish, the basket can feel like a mountain, and it is easy to give up after three pairs.

The visual support shows a simple flow: empty the basket onto the bed, pick up a sock, look for one that matches, fold the pair together, put it on the pile and carry it to the drawer when the basket is empty. The pictures of the boy sorting striped socks and of the basket make it clear what to do. Odd socks can get their own little pile, so nobody has to search forever.

A practical tip is to start with five pairs and build up over time, or to let the child sort only their own socks. A short goal makes it easier to feel finished. If you want to give each child their own weekly chore with a picture and a reminder, you can try Routined free for 14 days.
