About this visual support
Money is abstract in a way few everyday moments are. A note, a handful of coins and a small plastic card all swap goods for something invisible, and the link is nowhere to be seen. Add a queue breathing down your neck and a till that beeps, and that spot becomes the hardest place in the shop.
Visual support turns paying into an action with a clear start and a clear end: put the items down, wait for the total, hand over the card or the notes, take the receipt. The child sees the whole sequence before standing in the middle of it, and no longer has to read the cashier's pace to work out what is expected.
Practise at home with real coins and a made-up total before trying it for real. Then let the child pay for a single item in a small shop the first time, so the queue is short and there is room to think.
