What the mouth feels is the whole problem. A night retainer presses against palate and teeth in a way the body first reads as wrong, and the child is still expected to fall asleep with it in. The benefit, meanwhile, is invisible: a better bite somewhere in the future means nothing to someone who is tired and wants to lie down.
So it helps to make the short stretch between bathroom cabinet and bed concrete. Rinse the retainer, brush teeth, put the retainer in, put the case back on the shelf.
