Potty training is about more than sitting on the potty. The child has to learn to recognise the body's signals, connect them to what should be done, get to the potty in time and dare to sit still until it is finished. That is many steps to fall into place, and for many children it is the uncertainty around the whole process that creates resistance, not the potty itself.

Visual support makes the process clear and safe by showing the steps in order: feel that you need to, go to the potty, pull down the trousers, sit, wipe, wash hands. When the child sees the whole sequence, it becomes predictable what will happen, and a known order is much easier to follow than spoken instructions in the middle of it.

A tip: keep it undramatic and calm, let the child sit without pressure for a result and praise the try rather than the outcome. Security lets the body dare to relax.
