Few parts of the daily wash carry as much embarrassment as this one. The body is exposed, most children would rather nobody watched or commented, and yet it is exactly the kind of step that has to be done thoroughly – every single day, for the rest of their life. Plenty of families quietly skip the instruction part and hope it sorts itself out, which it rarely does.
Pictures take some of the pressure off. With the steps on the wall or on a screen, you do not have to stand there narrating what to wash and in which direction. Your child can look, do one step, look again. The images say the same thing every time, they never sigh and they never get embarrassed.
One practical thing to try: hang the sequence at eye level right by the toilet or inside the shower, and keep the washcloth on the shelf directly underneath, so the reminder sits where the hand already reaches.
