About this visual support
A concert is a rich experience, but also a setting the child cannot steer. The sound can come suddenly and loud, the audience presses close, and pauses and applause follow no order you can predict. For a child sensitive to impressions, what should be fun can quickly become too much.
Visual support gives back a piece of control by showing what will happen. When the child has seen pictures of the stage, the audience and how a concert is built up beforehand, the situation becomes less unknown. You can also show where the exit is and that it is fine to step out for a while, which is often enough to make the whole visit feel safe.
A tip: agree on a quiet signal and a calm spot in advance, and show it on a picture, so the child knows a break is always possible. Having a way out makes it easier to stay. In the Routined app you can build a picture series before the concert, from heading there to coming home again.
