Pick apples

Apple picking is one of the most fun jobs of autumn, but you need to know which apples are ripe and how to pick without harming the tree. Pictures show how it is done. You will find the visual support below.

About this visual support

When the apple tree is heavy with fruit in September, most children want to join in. It is concrete, outdoors in the fresh air and gives something to eat straight away. At the same time, there are small rules adults take for granted: you do not pull the branch, you twist the apple upwards, you do not throw it into the basket and you do not climb higher than you are allowed. Without an explanation, there are easily more bruised apples than picked ones.

The visual support shows the hand movements. The pictures of the boy reaching for an apple and picking from the tree can be combined with steps such as: take the basket, look for red apples, lift and twist gently, place the apple carefully in the basket and carry the basket in when it is full. Windfalls on the ground can become a separate job, with a bucket for apples for compost or animals.

A practical tip is to let the child be in charge of the lowest branches while the adult takes the rest with a ladder. Count the apples together when the basket is full, so it is clear what the child has achieved.
