Riding down the street asks a lot of a body at the same time. Balance sits in the legs, braking sits in the hands, and the eyes have to stay ahead while also noticing cars, gravel and a neighbour reversing out of a driveway. The weather then gets a vote on whether the ride happens at all, which is why cycling sometimes ends before it starts.
A visual support does most of its work before the wheels move. Helmet, shoes, water bottle, a quick look at the tyres and an agreement about the route mean the energy goes into pedalling rather than into figuring out what is missing. One tip specific to cycling: put the turning point on a card. A named place to turn around, a lamp post or the crossing by the shop, keeps the brakes from arriving as a surprise and settles the way home in advance.
