Family walk

The question arrives after five minutes and then every five minutes after that: how much further? With nothing to count down towards, a walk becomes a distance without shape, and tired legs get heavier – map the route with the pictures below.

About this visual support

A visual support for the family walk works as a map of time rather than distance. Four or five pictures – shoes on, walk to the bridge, stop at the bench, head home, have a drink – let a child see where in the route you are without asking. Every picture ticked off is proof that the walk really does end.

That matters for stamina. Outdoors there are no walls or doors marking that something is finished, and when the landscape looks the same the whole way, half the route feels as long as all of it. Cold, wind and wet socks drain energy faster than anything you do indoors.

A tip: tie each picture to something you can actually see along the way – the red postbox, the playground, the hill. The image then becomes a checkpoint in the real world and not only on paper, and the same landmarks work every time you walk that way. The pictures are free to download, and in the Routined app you can build the whole route digitally and try it for 14 days.
