What makes a parents meeting particular is that the child is the subject but not a participant. Things are said about the class, about the year ahead and perhaps about that specific child, and the one person who does not hear it is the child. At the same time the evening routine breaks: a parent is away, the timings shift, and bedtime is handled by someone who does it slightly differently.
Visual support removes the uncertainty around the evening itself. A row showing where the parent is, who is at home and that they will be back before morning makes the absence bounded rather than open-ended.
