School work

The hardest part of school work is rarely the task itself. The material is out, the time exists, but the step from sitting at the table to writing the first word can take twenty minutes. The pictures below turn that start into something concrete.

About this visual support

Getting started is a skill of its own, separate from knowing the task. What has to happen is that an unformed amount of work becomes a first concrete action, and that step usually comes without instructions. The prompt start now contains no information about what to do first, and so the wait grows longer the more important the task is. Many children with ADHD recognise exactly that gap.

Visual support gives the start content. Get the book out, write the date, read the first question. Three pictures mean the work does not begin with the whole task but with something small and clearly bounded. It also lets the work resume after a break without the whole decision having to be taken again.

A concrete tip is to write the heading before the break, not after. A page already started is far easier to return to than a blank one. In Routined the homework can sit as a short timed step after the afternoon snack, and the app can be tried for fourteen days at no cost.
