Tidying requires sorting, and sorting requires categories that already exist. A playroom often lacks them: blocks lie among puzzles, a pair of scissors among soft toys, and for every item a decision has to be made about where it belongs. A hundred decisions in a row take more energy than the picking up itself, which is why many people stand in the middle of the room without knowing where to start, even though they want to finish.
