Play and move

#play#movement#ball#activity

Active play burns energy and trains coordination, but it needs a clear start and a space to move in so it does not fizzle out. A picture gives the play content to get going with. See the support below.

About this visual support

Playing and moving is a basic need, especially for children with a lot of energy. Movement helps the body regulate, trains coordination and gives an outlet for tension that might otherwise come out in harder ways. But sometimes it is the getting started that is tricky: a child can be full of energy and still not know what to do with it.

Visual support gives active play a clear start and content. A picture of jumping, running or throwing a ball becomes a concrete suggestion that is easy to latch onto, instead of an open call to go out and play that easily lands in nothing. The picture also makes it clear when the moment starts and when it ends, which helps with transitions.

A tip: offer a couple of movement pictures to choose from, so the child gets to decide but does not have to start from a blank page. A clear suggestion gets the body going. In the Routined app you can add movement moments as recurring steps in the day, so there are planned times to let out energy.
