Spelling

The frustrating thing about spelling is that the knowledge never feels stable. Maths can be worked out again if you forget, but a misspelled word cannot be derived: either it is in memory or it is not. When the same word comes out right one day and wrong the next, many people conclude they cannot do it at all, even though the knowledge is in fact growing slowly all the time.
