Sunday evening

The body is meant to slow down while the head is already standing in Monday morning's school corridor. That clash makes the evening messy. The steps below hold pyjamas, toothbrush and a warm drink together so winding down can keep its own pace.

About this visual support

Sunday evening carries the next day inside it. That is why it rarely turns cosy on its own: the lights go down and the blanket comes out, while the kit bag, the homework and the whole new week keep rubbing somewhere at the back of the mind. Children who find it hard to shift between modes notice this especially, and the worry often shows up as grumbling or a burst of energy at half past eight.

So it helps when the evening gets a visible row. With pyjamas, a warm drink, a stretch on the sofa and toothbrushing laid out as pictures, it becomes obvious that the week does not begin right now, but after all of these frames. Include a card about tomorrow as well, packing the bag for instance, and place it early in the evening. Then the worry has a slot in the order instead of turning up just as the light goes off.

In the Routined app you can assemble Sunday evening as its own routine, with images, sequence and a quiet reminder when it is time. The trial runs for 14 days at no cost, and the pictures on this page are free to download.
