On the mat two people are meant to grapple with each other, but only in a specific way. The visual support below sets out the parts of a session and the rules that keep close contact on the right side of the line, from warm-up to handshake.

About this visual support

Few sports ask for as much physical contact as wrestling. A child has to grip, hold and resist another person who is doing exactly the same thing back, while staying inside rules that decide when a hold is allowed and when it is not. That mix of closeness and control is the sport itself, but it is hard to grasp from a coach talking alone.

This is why pictures work unusually well here. Lay the session out in its parts: warm-up, technique drill, sparring in pairs, cool-down and handshake. Your child then knows where in the session they are and how long the close contact lasts. Add a card of its own for stop, which they can point at when it becomes too much, because mid-grip there are rarely words left. For anyone who winds up quickly, going through the row on the way to the hall helps the body know what is coming before the mat is under their feet.

In the Routined app the training session can sit as a routine with pictures and times, and you can try the app for fourteen days at no cost.
